Candle Care & Safety

Decorative candles vary in size, shape and finish. Keep them cool, dry and out of direct sunlight. Handle gently and keep small parts away from children and pets. Ask us for a specific candle's measurements before ordering if size matters.

Before lighting

Follow the instructions supplied with your particular candle. If a design has paint, glitter, charms, resin pieces or other decorations and its suitability for burning is not clear, do not light it; contact us first. General candle-care advice cannot establish whether a decorated design is safe to burn.

General guidance for candles confirmed suitable for burning

  • Trim the wick to about ¼ inch before each lighting unless its supplied instructions say otherwise.
  • Use a stable, heat-resistant holder on a clear surface. Allow space for wax drips from freestanding shapes.
  • Stay with a lit candle. Put it out before leaving the room or sleeping.
  • Keep at least 12 inches from anything that can burn and beyond the reach of children and pets.
  • Avoid fans, drafts and air vents. Do not move a candle while it is lit or its wax is liquid.
  • Extinguish carefully without water. Check that the wick is out and let the wax cool completely before handling.

Follow the candle's specific limits for burn duration and when to stop using it. Do not burn a candle to its base. Ask us if these details are missing; do not guess from another candle's instructions.
